Our verdict
Travel FX is an online currency provider that advertises itself as “consistently having the cheapest exchange rates, offering multiple payment options and guaranteed delivery”. This review of its website finds all that to be pretty accurate. Travel FX is clear about its exchange rates, which compare favourably to the Post Office and Waitrose Money. It doesn’t display its exchange rate versus the interbank rate – however a quick message to the customer services team got a very speedy response on that. Beware though the handling fee is £20.00 for orders less than £300.
Is Travel FX good for travel money?
Pricing
Buying euros with £1,000 on Travel FX will get you €1,165.10, an exchange rate of 1.1651 euros per pound. This compares to a lower exchange rate of 1.163 euros per pound with the Post Office.
Buying dollars, also with £1,000, on Travel FX gets you £1,315.80, an exchange rate of 1.3158 dollars per pound. This compares to a lower exchange rate of 1.306 dollars per pound at the Post Office.
Travel FX doesn’t state anywhere on its website what its exchange rate mark up is versus the interbank rate – that is the wholesale rate banks and large financial institutions use when trading currencies with one another.
But a quick look on the European Central Bank website shows the ECB rate is £1 = 1.1819 euros. So that gives an idea of the difference between what it offers (1.1651) and the wholesale rate. That difference is how Travel FX makes its money.
For dollars the difference is 1.3253 interbank versus 1.3158 with Travel FX.
All figures taken as a snapshot on 16 October 2026.
There are no commission charges. Postage is usually free unless you select a Saturday or 9.00am delivery. Specific note denomination requests carry a small charge.
The handling fee is £20.00 for orders less than £300.00, £7.50 for orders between £300.00 and £749.99 and it’s free for orders of £750.00 or more.
For multi-currency orders a £5.00 fee is applied to each currency of less than £300.00. It’s free for each currency over £300.00.
All prices include VAT where applicable.
Market Access
Travel FX offers 51 currencies as available to buy on its website, showing the latest rates for all of them, in which all its rates beat the Post Office.
It has all the major currencies; US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), Australian Dollars (AUD), Canadian Dollars (CAD), Japanese Yen (JPY), Swiss Francs (CHF), Chinese Yuan (CNY).
It also offers a number of other global currencies including: Polish Zloty (PLN), Turkish Lira (TRY), New Zealand Dollars (NZD), Norwegian Kroner (NOK), Swedish Kronor, Danish Krone, South African Rand (ZAR), Mexican Pesos (MXN), Indian Rupees (INR), Thai Baht, Singapore Dollars, Hong Kong Dollars (HKD), and many more.
Apps & Platforms
Travel FX is online only. It doesn’t have physical stores, which is why it says it can so consistently beat the rates of other currency providers, including the Post Office.
Its website is very user-friendly and easy to navigate. Exchange rates and fees are displayed transparently, alongside comparisons to the Post Office and in some cases Waitrose Money exchange rates.
Ordering currency is very simple. You have to set up an account with Travel FX via its website but this is fairly standard practice for buying currency online and is a pretty painless experience.
You can pay for your currency in one of three ways on the website; by a manual bank transfer; using a Visa or Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay (American Express and corporate cards are not accepted); or pay using a mobile bank app via a service called Tink, an open banking platform that lets banks, fintechs, and startups connect to thousands of bank accounts more easily.
The currency – or multiple currencies – you order will be delivered to you as cash; there is no physical card or app.
Customer Service
Contacting customer service at Travel FX about travel money is via an online form only (unless you want to send a letter, there is also a postal address given).
When contacted for details of their exchange rate mark up, the automated reply was: “Thank you for your message. We endeavour to answer all queries within one working day.”
To Travel FX’s credit they came back very quickly – within the hour on Friday 16 October – with a straight, clear answer to say:
“The current EUR & USD interbank rates are 1.1845 & 1.3322 respectively. Our current live rates to buy EUR & USD are 1.1652 & 1.3167 respectively.”
Office opening hours are 09.30am to 16.30pm Monday to Friday (except Bank Holidays).
The website does also have a fairly extensive FAQ section of answers to common questions that covers issues such as delivery and ways to pay for your currency.
Added Value & Research
Travel FX doesn’t provide FX forecasts or exchange rate market commentary.
But in its blog section it does have a series of guides with lots of helpful educational material that can help people make better decisions around things like currency conversion charges, city guides and cost comparisons to other big name currency providers.

Pros
Cons
Our verdictRevolut’s travel debit card offers competitive exchange rates, fee-free ATM allowances and strong in-app controls, but weekend FX markups and plan limits mean it’s not entirely free. One of the best UK travel debit cards for tech-confident travellers, just watch the limits and weekend markups. What does Revolut’s travel card do and who is it for?Revolut’s travel card is a multi-currency debit card designed for UK travellers who want to spend abroad without traditional bank foreign transaction fees. You can hold and exchange 36 currencies in-app and spend in 150+ currencies worldwide. It’s available as a virtual or physical debit card, works with Apple Pay and Google Pay, and comes with built-in budgeting and security tools such as instant payment notifications, card freezing, and spending limits. Is Revolut a good card for travelling? Yes, particularly for short trips and regular travellers who want competitive exchange rates and app-based control. But, it’s more than that. Revolut's Travel Money Card functions as a travel debit card, allowing global spending and currency exchange, but it also works as an everyday spending account with budgeting tools, crypto access, investments (via separate entities), and insurance options depending on plan. How much does it cost to spend money abroad with Revolut? There are no FX fees for using the Revolut Travel Money Card abroad on the standard plan when you spend less than £1,000. If you spend more than that aborad you are charged 1% FX fees, or 0.5% on the Plus plan (which is £3.99 a month). If you are planning on spending a lot when you are travelling, then the Premium, Metal and Ultra accounts have no FX fees at. However, if you are spending abroad on a Revolut card over the weekend, there is a flat 1% charge. Currencies: You can spend abroad in over 150 currencies, so that should pretty much cover anywhere you need to go. App & Platform: You can use a physical card or pay using the excellent Revolut app, which is very easy to use. Customer Service: Pretty much all online, and whilst there have been mixed reviews for large issues, the majority can be solved via their AI. Offers: There is a pretty decent Revolut refer a friend scheme, so make sure you take advantage of that if you are travelling in a group, so you can spread your spending to stay below the account offer limits. | |||
