More than half of Britons are not confident they can afford to retire, according to new research from Hargreaves Lansdown, highlighting growing concerns about pension savings and retirement planning.
UK pension provider Hargreaves Lansdown survey of 1,500 UK adults found that only 38% believe they will have enough money to retire comfortably. Confidence rises only marginally to 39% among people aged over 55, while just 32% of women feel financially prepared for retirement compared with 44% of men. The outlook is even more concerning for self-employed workers, with only 15% saying they are confident they can afford to retire.
How much do you need to retire in the UK?
The findings come as the latest Retirement Living Standards suggest a single person now needs around £13,900 a year for a minimum retirement lifestyle, £32,700 for a moderate lifestyle and £45,400 for a comfortable retirement. For couples, these figures rise to £22,500, £45,400 and £62,700 respectively.
Helen Morrissey, Head of Retirement Analysis at Hargreaves Lansdown, said many people feel overwhelmed by retirement planning, but taking stock of existing pensions can make a significant difference.
She recommends checking for lost pension pots, considering whether it makes sense to consolidate SIPPS and pensions, and reviewing retirement income projections regularly. Even small increases in pension contributions can have a meaningful impact over the long term, particularly where employers offer matching contributions.
One of the biggest challenges for savers is understanding whether their current pension savings will actually support the retirement lifestyle they want. Knowing how much income you’ll need is the first step before deciding how much to save.
