Our verdict

StoneX Trading is particularly strong for index trading, which is not surprising as City Index originally started out as an indices broker. You can spread bet or trade CFDs on 40+ global indices, including the UK 100, Wall Street, US SP 500, US Tech 100 and Germany 40, as well as sector and thematic indices. I've always rated its combination of index trading signals, analysis and Performance Analytics particularly highly.

Is StoneX Trading good for indices trading?

StoneX Trading is one of the better brokers for trading indices and this has always been one of City Index's strongest markets.

In fact, as the old name suggests, City Index started out as an indices broker, and indices have historically been particularly popular with UK spread bettors.

You can now trade 40+ global indices, including all the major markets such as the FTSE 100 (UK 100), Dow (Wall Street), S&P 500 (US SP 500), Nasdaq (US Tech 100), DAX (Germany 40), Nikkei (Japan 225) and Australia 200.

But I think StoneX Trading is more interesting when you get beyond those obvious markets. There are 14 UK sector indices, including banking, energy and mining, as well as thematic indices covering areas such as green stocks, the remote economy and cannabis.

I've previously covered City Index's Magnificent Seven basket, for example, which gave you a single trade covering Alphabet, Apple, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla. I thought that was a good addition because it let you take a view on the big US technology stocks without having to put seven separate trades on.

The platform is good too. You get TradingView charting, trading signals, market analysis and Performance Analytics, so there is plenty there for both finding index trades and analysing how well you've traded them afterwards.

Overall, StoneX Trading is particularly good for active index traders who want more than just the FTSE, Dow and DAX.

Pricing

StoneX Trading is competitive on index pricing, although I wouldn't necessarily choose it purely because it has the tightest spread on every market.

Spreads vary by index and market conditions. For example, StoneX's current indicative pricing shows a 0.4-point spread on the US SP 500, 1 point on the US Tech 100, 1.3 on Germany 40 and 1.1 on the UK 100.

Those are indicative rather than guaranteed spreads, so you need to check what you are actually being quoted when you trade.

You can trade indices through either spread bets or CFDs. Spread betting is priced in pounds per point and profits are generally free from UK Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty, while CFDs are traded in the underlying market's base currency and losses can potentially be offset against taxable gains. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and can change.

There are both cash and futures index markets. If you're holding an index position for longer, it's worth comparing the futures price with the cash market because daily overnight financing on a cash position can add up.

Market Access

StoneX Trading offers more than 40 global index markets across cash and futures, covering European, US, Asian and Australian stock markets.

For most traders, the obvious markets will be the UK 100, Wall Street, US SP 500, US Tech 100 and Germany 40.

But there is more depth than that.

There are 14 UK sector indices, including banking, energy and mining, which are useful if you have a view on a particular part of the UK stock market rather than the FTSE 100 as a whole.

There are also thematic indices, which let you trade groups of shares based around a particular investment theme.

I've always liked these sorts of markets because sometimes the trade you want isn't really about an individual company. If you think AI is overvalued, for example, you may want to take a broader view rather than simply shorting Nvidia.

StoneX also offers extended hours on its major global indices, which is useful because index markets increasingly react to news outside the main underlying stock-market session.

The main limitation remains DMA. You're trading StoneX's OTC index markets rather than placing an order directly onto an exchange.

Platform & Apps

StoneX Trading's platforms are particularly well suited to index trading because indices are fast-moving markets where execution and being able to react quickly actually matter.

StoneX says its average execution speed is 0.002 seconds and 99.99% of trades are successfully executed.

Those are good execution stats and particularly relevant if you are trading indices around economic announcements, the US market open or other periods when prices can move very quickly.

The main Web Trader platform is the one I'd use for most index trading. You get TradingView charts, quick trading, Reuters news, customisable workspaces and Performance Analytics.

You can also trade through TradingView, MT4 or the StoneX Trading mobile app.

The app itself won Best Trading App at the Good Money Guide Awards 2025 and includes TradingView charts and Performance Analytics.

I've used the platform and app for our reviews and generally prefer doing my initial analysis on a larger screen, then using the app to keep an eye on a position when I'm away from my desk.

That's particularly useful with indices. If I've got a position on the FTSE or S&P 500, I don't want to have to sit at my desk all day just because US inflation numbers are coming out at 1:30pm.

Customer Service

Customer service is important when trading indices because they can move extremely quickly.

If you are trading £1 a point on the FTSE, a temporary platform problem is irritating. If you are trading £100 a point on the Dow when US payroll numbers come out, it is potentially a much bigger issue.

That's why I generally prefer established brokers like StoneX Trading for larger leveraged positions rather than choosing a platform entirely on the basis of the cheapest headline spread.

StoneX provides online support and live chat alongside its wider customer service offering.

The combination of an established broker, decent execution and a good platform is more important to me as position sizes increase.

Research & Analysis

StoneX Trading is very good for index research because indices are driven as much by macroeconomic events as they are by individual company news.

There is regular analysis covering markets such as the S&P 500, Dow Jones and DAX, alongside broader economic and market commentary.

You also get an integrated economic calendar covering inflation, employment, interest rates and central-bank speeches. That's particularly useful for index traders because something like US CPI or non-farm payrolls can move the S&P 500 and Nasdaq significantly within seconds.

But as with StoneX's other trading products, Performance Analytics is one of the features I like most.

I've used it when testing the platform and it helps you look beyond whether an individual trade made or lost money and see patterns in how you actually trade.

For index trading, that can be particularly revealing. You might discover that you're profitable trading the FTSE in the morning but consistently lose money chasing the Dow around the US open. Or that you make money on longer-term S&P positions but give it back when you start day trading.

StoneX also provides trading signals, something I rated highly in my previous City Index review because they were their own index trading signals rather than simply bought in from a third-party provider.

For me, that combination of ideas before you trade, fast execution when you trade and Performance Analytics afterwards is what makes StoneX Trading particularly good for indices.
