Our verdict
If I were going to trade Prop, it would be with CMC Markets Funded, primarily because of the reputation of the company behind it. Having spoken to Benjamin Charbonneau, Global Head of Retail at CMC Markets, what I liked most was the focus on making payouts straightforward rather than introducing unnecessary restrictions. After all, the biggest complaint about the prop trading industry is trying to get your winnings back!
Challenge fees are also refunded after successful challenge completion; traders can request regular withdrawals, and CMC aims to identify profitable traders whose strategies it can replicate in live markets. However, the platform is from Match-Trader, which is fine and industry standard, but I think it’ll be better once they switch over to CMC Markets' main platform and infrastructure.
CMC Markets Funded Could Be a Game Changer for Prop Trading
I pretty much think tech is dead in trading. The advancement of AI means that brokers can create hyper-personalised trading platforms in hours, not months or years. AI vibe coding means that all platforms look the same now. This is probably also TradingView’s fault for making their charts so good and easy to integrate that they are the default everywhere. Before, all brokers' trading platforms had their own look and feel. Now, every single new brokerage website and trading platform is a carbon copy.
So, in a world where trading platforms are essential white goods, what makes one broker or trading platform stand out from another if it’s not tech, liquidity, market range or price? Especially in the prop trading industry, which is largely unregulated and where you can set up a prop trading platform white label in about a day.
I think the key to choosing a prop firm is how much you trust it.
Prop isn’t going anywhere, people love it, and traders are going to do it. So they should have the right to do it in a safe environment. Despite what the naysayers say about prop, I think being able to test your trading ability in a limited-risk environment where you can actually make a bit of money if you do well, is a good thing.
Demo trading accounts are great, but as the classic paper trading duelling anecdote from Reminiscences of a Stock Operator points out, a good shooter can snap the stem off a wineglass at twenty paces, but can they do it with a pistol pointed at their heart?
Prop trading gives you some live environment insight into how you’ll trade with real money on the table.
But who do you trust? A new broker offering flashy sign-up incentives, or an established incumbent giving traders what they want, but with all the reputational risk to worry about if they mess it up.
I know who I’d choose…
Pricing: How Much Does CMC Markets Funded Cost?
CMC Markets Funded charges a one-off fee to enter a trading challenge, with prices starting at around $99 and rising to over $1,000 for larger account options. Traders can choose between one-step and two-step evaluations, with account sizes reaching $100,000.
Plus if you pass, CMC automatically refunds challenge fees once traders successfully complete their evaluation, rather than making them wait until their first profit withdrawal.
Successful traders generally receive 80% of simulated trading profits, increasing to 90% with an optional add-on. Withdrawals start at $50, with the first request typically taking 24–72 hours to review.
Market Access: What Can You Trade with CMC Markets Funded?
CMC Markets Funded offers simulated trading across major financial markets, including forex, stock indices, commodities and shares. When I tested the platform, I found approximately 170 stocks available alongside the major markets most active traders would expect.
That’s a fairly limited universe of instruments, but, to be honest most people just trade the top ten anyway. However, I hope that as CMC’s Prop offering grows, they will add more markets in line with the 20,000 or so they offer on the main CMC Markets platform.
Charbonneau confirmed that expanding the Funded product range is planned. However, these are simulated trading accounts, not conventional investment accounts, and traders do not own the underlying assets.
You can also trade simulated prediction markets which count towards your challenge profit and loss, where traders can speculate on the outcomes of events and have their performance count towards their trading challenge.
Which is quite cool, like Prediction Prop, because, Prediction Markets are massively popular and not going anywhere.
Apps and Platform: Is CMC Markets Funded Easy to Use?
No app, which is a shame as CMC Markets Funded currently uses Match-Trader, a third-party platform designed for proprietary trading firms, rather than CMC's own Next Generation trading platform.
It provides the essential functionality for placing trades, managing orders, setting stop losses and monitoring challenge performance. The platform also tracks trading rules and potential violations in real time.
Although the website is mobile-responsive and works on smartphones.
You should be able to trade Prop when CMC integrates funded trading into its forthcoming super app trading ecosystem, potentially introducing features such as advanced charting, automated strategies and AI-powered trading tools.
I’m not a very sophisticated trader, but I do trade how I like, which is to generally eyeball a market and take a position on whether I think it will continue to go up or down. Which is fairly easy with the top markets tab on the left, which brings up the chart on the right.
Plus I like to take a position on upcoming news which is really what moves the market.
Other prop firms don’t let you trade over news, or weekends for example, but CMC Markets Funded said they are moving away from these “convoluted rules”.
Customer Service: How Can You Contact CMC Markets Funded?
CMC Markets Funded uses an AI-powered support system alongside a dedicated customer service team. According to Charbonneau, the AI assistant can access individual trading activity, including positions, stop losses and challenge violations, to explain what happened during a particular trade.
CMC estimates that approximately 70% of customer queries can be answered automatically, with more complicated issues escalated to its support team through email.
For bigger traders, there is the possibility of getting your own account manager, to speak to directly.
Added Value and Research: What Makes CMC Markets Funded Different?
The biggest value add of CMC Markets Funded is its approach to identifying genuinely successful traders. Rather than simply collecting challenge fees, CMC says it intends to hedge selected profitable traders' positions in live markets, giving it a commercial incentive to support their success.
The company is also working with Verichain, a specialist trader recruitment partner to identify talent and provide potential career opportunities.
Its simulated prediction markets offer something different from conventional prop trading, although advanced research tools such as CMC's client sentiment indicators and pattern recognition software are not yet available on the Funded platform.
So, not much research, especially compared to the main CMC Markets platform, which offers excellent sentiment analysis. But I’m sure this will come.
