Gemini Crypto Platform Alternatives

We have compared the best cryptocurrency exchanges and platforms in the UK, by what they are good for, how much they cost, how may cryptocurrencies you can trade and also what our users think of them. Don’t invest unless you’re prepared to lose all the money you invest. Crypto is a high-risk investment and you should not expect to be protected if something goes wrong.

Gemini exchange review: a secure platform for crypto trading that’s ideal for beginners
Gemini crypto super app

Provider: Gemini

Verdict: Gemini is an easy-to-use crypto exchange platform that offers access to a wide range of tokens as well as staking services. With a clean interface, a focus on security, and educational guides for beginners, it’s ideal for those getting started in the world of crypto trading.

Who is Gemini?

Gemini is a New York-based crypto exchange and custodian that was founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (aka the ‘Winklevoss twins’). It was founded in 2014 and launched in 2015. Today, the exchange is available in over 70 countries. Globally, it has around 500,000 users.

Gemini prides itself on its security and regulatory compliance. In the UK, it’s authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as an Electronic Money Institution. However, it’s not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). So, if the platform was to become compromised, users’ money would not be protected by the UK government.

What does Gemini offer?

Gemini offers access to many different crypto tokens including the likes of Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, and Solana. Overall, there are more than 70 different crypto tokens available to trade (you can trade on the desktop platform or the app).

The minimum deposit in the UK is only £10. So, it’s possible to get started with a small amount of capital.

The platform also offers the ability to stake certain crypto assets (Ethereum and Solana). This allows users to put their crypto to work on the blockchain and earn rewards.

For more sophisticated traders, Gemini offers the ActiveTrader platform (users can easily switch between the standard interface and ActiveTrader). This is an advanced crypto trading platform that has a range of tools and can be customised.

Note that in some countries, Gemini offers access to tokenised US stocks (these are digital versions of traditional company shares that live on a blockchain) and prediction markets. These services are not available in the UK, however, due to FCA regulations.

What is Gemini like to use?

The account opening process with Gemini is relatively straightforward. It can be done via the app or the website.

However, one must complete a short crypto investing questionnaire when opening an account (to show that you understand how crypto investing works and the risks involved). This is not the easiest questionnaire.

One other thing worth pointing out is that there is a 24-hour ‘cooldown’ period when you open an account. This means that you cannot actually trade crypto on the platform until 24 hours after signing up for an account.

Once set-up, you’ll find a clean interface that is well designed and intuitive. It’s very easy to work out how to trade.

Of course, you’ll need to fund your account before you can trade. Debit card is the standard option here but there is a 3.49% fee for this type of payment (you can also do bank transfer and instant bank transfer with Plaid).

The good news is that you can deposit money in GBP. This eliminates the need for currency conversion fees.

One great feature of the platform is that there are educational guides covering different crypto assets. These could be helpful for beginner traders.

In terms of customer support, user reports vary. Although Gemini offers 24/7 support, some customers have reported that the support has room to improve (there’s no phone support).

Is Gemini secure?

As mentioned above, Gemini prioritises security. When you hold crypto assets on the Gemini platform, the majority of your assets are held offline in a state-of-the-art cold storage system. This offers $75 million in insurance coverage. Meanwhile, your assets held in its hot wallet are also fully insured. Additionally, Gemini requires two-factor authentication (2FA) for every account. This ensures that even if a password is compromised, an unauthorised user cannot gain access without the second verification step. Note that Gemini is SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 compliant. It is the world’s first cryptocurrency exchange and custodian to achieve compliance with these security protocols.

Does Gemini have a referral programme?

In some countries, Gemini offers a referral programme whereby users can refer others to the platform and receive a bonus when they trade for the first time. However, this feature is not available in the UK today due to Financial Promotions regulations implemented by the FCA.

What are Gemini’s fees like?

With Gemini, there are a range of fees to be aware of. These include:

  • Deposit fees: While you can make bank transfers and crypto transfers for free, debit card fees are a high 3.49%.
  • Trading fees: Users pay an instant fee of 1.49% and a convenience fee of 1.00%.
  • ActiveTrader fees: These are quite complex and vary depending on your trading volumes.
  • Withdrawal fees: Some types of withdrawals (e.g. withdrawals to USD wire transfers) have fees.

How does Gemini compare to competitors?

While Gemini is a solid platform, it lags rival platforms in some areas. For example, while Gemini offers access to 70 crypto tokens, Coinbase offers access to over 250 tokens.

Gemini’s fees can be higher than those of competitors too. For example, the standard trading fee is 1.49% plus 1.00%, however, on eToro crypto trading fees are only 1.00%
