Robinhood options trading has come to UK customers of the investment app. From today, Robinhood customers in the UK can now trade options on stocks and indices.Β
The upgrade addresses the biggest disappointment the Good Money Guide had with the investment app and puts it in a much more competitive position.
This is because there are already a range of UK platforms offering ordinary trading of US stocks. The addition of options trading to the app makes its overall proposition better defined and more attractive.
In a launch offer, users will be able to trade options in the UK with no Robinhood contract fees for orders placed up until 4:59am BST on May 17, 2025. After this period the app will charge a $0.50 fee per contract.
Other costs also apply when trading options, such as exchange fees with index options.
President of Robinhood UK Jordan Sinclair said: βOptions trading has historically been difficult for UK investors to access due to high fees, complicated platforms, and limited educational resources.
βToday, weβre excited to roll out a US options trading experience that is both affordable and accessible, and leverages Robinhoodβs powerful suite of tools to help UK investors take control of their financial future.β
Options are contracts between buyers and sellers which allow them to speculate on the future price movement of assets, such as stocks, rather than the stocks themselves.
For example, they can be used to buy or sell shares in a company at a specific price within a specific period, regardless of any change in the price of the shares on the stock market.
Robinhood offers educational resources including an options guide and video series for those interested in developing their knowledge of these derivatives.
The app includes tools to experiment with options trading strategies: Options Strategy Builder and Simulated Returns.
In October Robinhood introduced margin trading for UK customers, allowing them to trade with money borrowed against their portfolios.
The firm has also been in discussions with UK regulators regarding offering and managing Individual Savings Aaccounts (ISAs) alongside general investment accounts.
