About Your Car

This car finance claim letter generator is completely free to use, we don’t charge fees, take commissions, or share your details. We’ve created it simply to help drivers claim what they’re owed safely and easily.

How to use the car finance claim letter generator: step-by-step instructions

If you took out car finance between 2007 and 2024, you may have been charged more than you should have because a dealer or broker earned a hidden commission from your lender. The FCA has confirmed that millions of drivers could be due compensation for unfair motor finance agreements.

Use this guide alongside our form to help you generate a strong, complaint letter based on the FCA’s template.

1. Enter your car / finance details

When you first open the generator, you’ll be asked to fill in basic information about your vehicle sale and the finance agreement. Typical fields include:

  • Vehicle registration (number plate)
  • Where you bought the car (dealer / broker name)
  • Date of purchase
  • Date of the finance agreement
  • Your date of birth

These details help the letter correctly identify the loan you are complaining about, making it easier for the lender to locate your account and assess your case.

2. Fill in lender / address and your contact info

Next, the form will ask for:

  • The address of the motor finance provider (lender)
  • Your current address
  • Your address at the time the agreement was made
  • Your name, email, and date (for sending)

This section ensures your complaint is properly addressed to the right firm, and that they can send correspondence to you. It also ensures the firm knows which version of your address (current vs historic) to use if things have moved.

3. Submit and generate your draft complaint

Once you’ve entered all the required fields, click “Submit” and the system will automatically assemble a letter in the FCA’s complaint format. This letter will:

  • Explain that you are complaining about undisclosed commission in your motor finance
  • Ask the lender to investigate whether a discretionary commission, high commission, or tied arrangement applied
  • Reference the relevant rules and FCA guidance
  • You’ll receive the draft letter via the email you provided and on the page after you press submit so you can copy and paste it

4. Review, adjust, and send your letter

Before sending:

  • Double-check all the values you entered (dates, names, addresses, finance amount)
  • If there is additional context or documents you want to point out (e.g. original brochures, dealer correspondence, commission statements), you can add them as attachments or a supplementary paragraph
  • Make sure the letter states clearly that you are requesting your lender to assess your case under the FCA’s rules for motor finance commission complaints

Once satisfied, send it to the lender by a recorded method (recorded post, email with read receipt) so you have proof of delivery.

5. After sending: what the FCA says will happen next

According to FCA guidance on car finance complaints:

  1. The lender should acknowledge your complaint (ideally within 8 weeks).
  2. If you don’t get a final response in time, you may follow up or escalate the complaint.
  3. Under the new regime, once the compensation scheme is in place, your complaint may be assessed under it (if eligible) so you may receive compensation more quickly.
  4. If you are unhappy with the lender’s final response, you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Tips for users to get the quickeest outcome from our car finance claim letter generator

  • Use exact dates and names where possible,  vague or missing info may slow your complaint.
  • Collect any supporting documentation (loan agreement, dealer brochures, prior emails) and mention them in the letter.
  • Do use a claims management company (CMC) as they charge large commissions,  the FCA says you can complain yourself for free.
