Spread betting profits are also free from UK Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty under current tax rules, depending on your individual circumstances. Is StoneX Trading a good spread betting broker? StoneX Trading is one of my favourite spread betting brokers and was the winner of Best Spread Betting Broker at the Good Money Guide Awards 2025. That award came when the retail trading business was still called City Index, but it is now StoneX Trading and the core spread betting offering remains very strong. In fact, StoneX Trading still displays the Good Money Guide Best Spread Bet Broker 2025 award on its spread betting pages. It has also done particularly well in our awards over the years. City Index won Best Trader Tools in 2023, Best Trading App in 2024 and then Best Spread Betting Broker in 2025. What makes StoneX Trading stand out is that it is a very good all-rounder. There are spread betting brokers that can sometimes beat it on price on individual markets, but StoneX combines competitive spreads with thousands of markets, a very good trading platform, TradingView integration and some genuinely useful tools. Performance Analytics is still one of my favourite features. Rather than just showing you what you have made or lost, it looks at your trading behaviour and helps you identify where you are making mistakes. If you are an active spread bettor, understanding how you lose money can sometimes be more useful than another trading signal. Overall, StoneX Trading remains one of the best spread betting brokers for UK traders who want a combination of good pricing, lots of markets and decent trading tools rather than simply choosing a broker based on the tightest headline spread. PricingStoneX Trading doesn’t charge commission on spread bets. Instead, its charge is included in the difference between the buy and sell price. Current minimum spreads start from 0.5 points on forex, 0.4 points on indices, 0.1% on shares and 1 point on commodities. Those are competitive headline rates, although, as with all spread betting brokers, the spread you actually pay depends on the market and when you trade it. If you hold a daily funded spread bet overnight, you will also pay overnight financing. That’s important because financing can become a much bigger cost than the spread if you keep a leveraged position open for weeks or months. There is also no Stamp Duty or Capital Gains Tax on spread betting profits under current UK tax rules. That’s one of the main advantages spread betting has over conventional share dealing, although tax treatment depends on your circumstances and can change. Market AccessStoneX Trading lets you spread bet on thousands of markets across shares, indices, forex, commodities and other financial markets. One of the things I have always liked about City Index’s spread betting offering is the range of shares available. This makes it more useful if you want to spread bet individual companies rather than just trading the FTSE, DAX, S&P 500 and major currency pairs. StoneX Trading also offers extended-hours trading, including access to pre- and post-market sessions. That can be particularly useful for US shares because companies often release results outside normal market hours. If Nvidia announces earnings after the closing bell, for example, you don’t necessarily have to wait until the following day’s main session before taking a position. One thing I would remove from the old review is the claim that City Index offers 12,000 markets and 182 FX pairs. Those were the old figures, whereas StoneX Trading’s current material now simply says thousands of markets. Platform & AppsStoneX Trading has one of the better spread betting platforms and gives you several different ways to trade. Its main Web Trader platform runs in your browser and has customisable workspaces and Performance Analytics. There is also the StoneX Trading mobile app, which won Best Trading App at the Good Money Guide Awards 2025. You can also connect your account to TradingView and trade directly from TradingView’s charts. MT4 is available as well for FX, commodities and indices, although personally I think StoneX Trading’s own platform is the better option for most spread bettors. Performance Analytics remains one of the standout features. It tracks your trading behaviour and decision-making against your goals, while GamePlan gives you a scorecard highlighting strengths, weaknesses and areas you can work on. This is something I have always liked about the platform. Most brokers are very good at giving you more things to trade. StoneX Trading also gives you tools designed to help you understand whether you are actually any good at trading them. Customer ServiceCustomer service is another reason I rate StoneX Trading highly as a spread betting broker. Spread betting is a leveraged product and, when markets are moving quickly, being able to get help with your account or a trade becomes considerably more important than it is with a straightforward investment account. StoneX Trading provides online support and live chat alongside its trading platforms. More importantly, it still feels like a proper trading broker rather than simply an app. That becomes increasingly important as the size and frequency of your trades increase. If I was putting £5 a point on the FTSE occasionally, customer service probably wouldn’t be at the top of my list. If I was regularly trading £100 a point across several markets, it absolutely would be. Research & AnalysisResearch and trading tools are one of StoneX Trading’s biggest strengths. The platform includes Performance Analytics, which tracks your trading behaviour and decision-making, and GamePlan, which scores your trading and highlights areas where you could improve. I’ve always thought this was particularly useful for spread betting because the biggest problem for many traders isn’t finding something to trade. It’s overtrading, increasing position sizes after a loss, cutting winners too early or letting losers run. Being able to analyse your own behaviour can therefore be considerably more useful than simply being given another buy or sell signal. You also get the broader StoneX market research and analysis offering alongside the charting and technical analysis tools available through TradingView. That combination of market analysis before you trade and Performance Analytics after you trade is one of the main reasons StoneX Trading stands out from more basic spread betting platforms – and why it deserved to win Best Spread Betting Broker at the Good Money Guide Awards 2025. An excellent share-dealing platform for those who want to deal shares regularly in the short and long term. You also get access to a huge range of UK small-cap shares, where you can request quotes from marketmakers via RSPs. This is something that is not available from other trading/investing platforms like CMC or Trading 212. An IG share dealing account is different from a spread betting or CFD trading account in that you actually own physical shares as opposed to trading derivatives. The ability to deal in shares with IG means that you can invest in companies for the long term alongside your short-term higher-risk speculation. An excellent share-dealing platform for those who want to deal in shares regularly in the short and long term.

The platform also has one of the best research portals for analysing stocks. Is it expensive to buy and sell shares on Hargreaves Lansdown? Hargreaves Lansdown is not as expensive as it used to be as there is no account charge for holding shares in a general investment account and a max of £3.75 in a stocks and shares ISA. HL does still cost more than competitors like AJ Bell and Interactive Brokers to buy and sell shares, but the account running costs can be lower because of the monthly cap. HL won the Best Stock Broker in our 2024, 2022 awards, and in 2021, it won Best Full-service Stockbroker for their all-round approach to customer service.. Another added bonus of dealing shares through HL is that their clients benefit from price improvements for best execution. HL say they reach out to multiple brokers to get the best prices for a trade and clients can make a saving of £18 per trade on average. This is particularly relevant if you are dealing with cap UK shares, which is where Hargreaves Lansdown excels. Overall, this is a solid pension offering. There’s access to many investments and fees are very low. Market access Trading 212 offers access to UK stocks, international stocks, ETFs, investment trusts, and more. In total, there are over 13,000 global stocks and ETFs available on the platform which for most investors, is going to be more than enough options. Those in the UK can also access CFDs. With CFDs, it’s possible to trade indices, commodities, forex, and stocks. Where the platform falls short against traditional platforms, however, is mutual funds. Regular mutual funds are not available – only ETFs and investment trusts. One other thing to point out is that the company executes through Interactive Brokers. It can take time to fill orders on small UK stocks. What are Trading 212’s fees Trading 212’s fees are very competitive. Here’s a snapshot of its fee structure:

Here, shares are ring-fenced and completely segregated from the company’s assets. So overall, the platform operates within safeguarding requirements. There are obviously risks that come with investing on the platform, however, especially if trading CFDs. App and platform Trading 212 offers desktop access and an app. The app, which has a 4.7 rating in Apple’s App Store – tends to be more popular with customers. Through the app, you can trade stocks and ETFs, check your account balances, analyse your portfolio and asset allocation, and research individual companies and ETFs. The interface is clean and suitable for both beginners and advanced investors. One issue to be aware of, however, is that the company is constantly tweaking the app and desktop interfaces. Some users find this frustrating. Added value and research Trading 212 offers more investing information than a lot of other low-cost platforms. On its ‘Learn’ page, there are many educational articles. That said, some topics are not explained that well. As a result, beginner investors could end up a little confused. One handy feature on the platform is the Trading 212 Hotlist. This shows the most popular stocks among its customers. On the downside, there doesn’t seem to be any investment research on the platform. The only source of investment ideas is the Hotlist. Customer service You can contact Trading 212 24/7 via the ‘contact us’ function in the app. This connects you with the T212 chat assistant who can connect you with an agent from the customer care team on chat.
