More than 30,000 users of the trading platform eToro have the shared portfolio of a top trader on the platform, Jeppe Kirk Bonde, through copy trading.
This comes as the trader has achieved a 37% return on investment over the last 12 months, above his historical average of 25% per year since 2013.
Bonde attributes his success to his combined knowledge of finance, politics, and technology.
In a LinkedIn post today, Bonde – whose profile states he is the most copied investor on eToro – revealed he had passed a “30k copiers milestone”.
“Many other investors understand one or two of these topics well, but very few can financially model with all three,” he said.
His “most noteworthy” investments have included the Magnificent Seven tech stocks: Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla.
Thanks to its astronomical rise on the back of AI-mania Nvidia alone returned more than 37,000% for his portfolio.
Bonde has also invested in oil and Bitcoin as well as stocks Deutsche Bank, Rheinmetall, Cronos, and Palantir.
He has, however, made some bad investments as well, which include buying into Russian natural gas group Novatek.
He lost 99% of the value of his stock in the firm when it delisted after being sanctioned by Western powers in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
However, his investments in defense stocks such as Rheinmetall just prior to the invasion “more than made up for those losses”.
Bonde invests in the following sectors: Energy, Financial services, Tech, Semiconductors, Crypto, Cannabis, Defense, Mining, Luxury fashion, Biotech and Skincare.
Copy trading
Though eToro is well known for its copy trading function, the concept was first introduced to the mainstream by Covestor in the US (now owned by Interactive Brokers).
Interactive Investor (ii) also recently launched its own social media app, ii Community, which allows users to discuss investment tips, stock picks and compare portfolios free of charge.
There can be a dark side to copy trading on platforms unregulated in the UK. Scams are rife, including social media personalities paid by brokers to introduce clients to these platforms.
