Best AU CFD Brokers With The Lowest Trading Fees

The cheapest Australian CFD broker will depend on what you trade and how frequently you trade. Active forex traders may benefit from raw-spread accounts with separate commissions, while less frequent traders may prefer the simplicity of spread-only pricing.

Use our comparison tables and reviews to compare the best Australian CFD brokers and switch to a CFD trading platform that offers the most markets, best pricing and client security.

Which CFD brokers in Australia have the lowest trading fees & cheapest costs?

We currently rate Pepperstone as the best CFD broker with the lowest trading fees and cheapest costs from it’s Razor account, with spreads from 0.0 points on selected markets, margin FX commissions from US$3.50 per standard lot per side, commission-free trading on several CFD asset classes and no account maintenance or inactivity fees. The most useful comparison, however, is the total cost of your typical trade, including the spread, commission and any overnight financing.

The Difference Between CFD Spreads And Commissions

Trading costs are particularly important when choosing a CFD broker if you trade frequently, as even small differences in spreads and commissions can add up over time. Australian CFD brokers generally charge through the spread, commission, or a combination of the two.

Pepperstone, for example, offers Razor account spreads from 0.0 points on selected markets. Its Standard account incorporates most trading fees into the spread, while the Razor account uses raw spreads plus fixed commissions on margin FX and Spot Gold.

Compare:

  • Minimum and typical spreads
  • Commission per trade or lot
  • Standard versus raw-spread accounts
  • Overnight financing
  • Share CFD commissions
  • Currency conversion costs

Raw Spreads Versus Standard Accounts

The cheapest account will depend on how you trade. Spread-only accounts are simpler because the broker’s charge is incorporated into the bid/offer spread, while raw-spread accounts can offer tighter pricing in exchange for a separate commission.

With Pepperstone’s Standard account, fees other than overnight funding are generally included in the spread, except for equity CFDs. Its Razor account provides raw spreads from 0.0 points on margin FX, with commissions from US$3.50 per standard lot per side. Spot Gold Razor pricing starts from a 0.08 spread.

For active traders, it is therefore worth calculating the total round-trip trading cost, rather than simply comparing headline minimum spreads.

Can You Trade CFDs Commission-Free?

Some CFD markets may be available without a separate trading commission. This can make the broker’s spread particularly important when comparing costs.

Pepperstone does not charge commission on index CFDs, commodity CFDs other than Razor Gold, or margin FX CFDs on its Standard account. Share CFDs are different and are generally subject to commission based on the underlying exchange.

Check costs across the markets you actually intend to trade, including:

  • Forex
  • Indices
  • Commodities
  • Shares
  • Cryptocurrencies

Don’t Ignore Overnight Funding For Longer Term CFD Positions

Spreads and commissions are only part of the cost of CFD trading. Positions held overnight can be subject to financing or swap charges, which can become significant if you keep leveraged positions open for several days or weeks.

Pepperstone applies rollover interest to applicable positions held beyond 5pm New York time, with the calculation depending on the underlying instrument.

This means a broker that appears cheapest for day trading may not necessarily be the cheapest for longer-term CFD positions.

Compare Non-Trading Fees Like Withdrawal Costs

Low-cost CFD brokers should also have competitive non-trading charges. Look at deposit and withdrawal costs, account fees, inactivity charges and any currency conversion fees.

Pepperstone says it charges no account opening or closing fees and no fees for deposits or withdrawals, subject to its stated conditions. It also does not charge account maintenance or inactivity fees.

These charges may seem relatively small individually, but they can make a difference when comparing the overall cost of maintaining a CFD trading account.
