Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card Review & Ratings: Updated 08/24/2026
Account: Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card
Description: The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a very good credit card for frequent travellers and customers who want to earn flexible rewards, particularly if they repay their balance every month. Its biggest advantage is the rewards program, offering up to 5x points alongside transfers to major airline and hotel loyalty programs. The 75,000-point welcome bonus is also attractive, although you’ll need to spend $5,000 within three months to earn it. The $95 annual fee is reasonable considering the rewards, $100 annual Chase Travel hotel credit and lack of foreign transaction fees. There are also useful travel protections and benefits. The main disadvantage is borrowing cost. With a 19.24%–27.49% variable APR and no introductory 0% period, this isn’t a good card for carrying a balance. Overall, it’s best for travellers and relatively high spenders who can maximise the rewards while clearing their balance each month.
APR & interest rates
The Chase Sapphire Preferred has a 19.24%–27.49% variable APR, depending on your creditworthiness. There is no introductory 0% purchase APR, making this a poor choice for carrying debt or financing large purchases. Interest can quickly outweigh the value of points earned, so the card works best for customers who repay their balance in full every month rather than using it for longer-term borrowing.
Fees
The card charges a $95 annual fee, which is relatively reasonable for a travel rewards card with this range of benefits. There are no foreign transaction fees, making it particularly attractive for overseas spending. Balance transfers, cash advances and late payments can incur additional charges, so it isn’t suitable for moving existing debt or withdrawing cash. Regular travellers should find the $95 fee relatively easy to justify.
Rewards & cashback
Rewards are excellent. You earn 5x points through Chase Travel; 3x on dining, gas, EV charging, eligible vacation homes, online groceries and selected streaming; 2x on other travel; and 1x elsewhere. Points can be redeemed for cash, travel and gift cards or transferred to airline and hotel partners including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United, Marriott and Hyatt.
Introductory offers
New customers can earn 75,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 within three months of opening their account. That’s potentially valuable for travellers, although the relatively high spending requirement won’t suit everyone. There is no introductory 0% purchase or balance-transfer period, so the offer is firmly focused on rewards rather than borrowing. Previous Sapphire Preferred customers may not qualify for the new-cardmember bonus.
Eligibility & credit requirements
Sapphire Preferred is aimed at customers with established credit rather than people building their credit history. Chase doesn’t specify a guaranteed minimum credit score or income for acceptance, and approval depends on your individual circumstances. You can check Chase for pre-approved offers without impacting your credit score. Existing Sapphire Preferred customers cannot apply, while previous card ownership can affect eligibility for the welcome bonus.
